can't get past the welcome screen

Asked by Jerry Sublett

I am attempting to install Ubuntu. I am on the Welcome (1st) screen, it says to pick a language, and English is highlighted. Now what? Clicking english minimises the screen. I don't see any way to progress with the installation. I assume that others have surmounted this hurdle, and I would appreciate any tips for doing so.

are you using the desktop version of Ubuntu? what version 7.04?

are you using a desktop or laptop?

have you tried the alternate (text mode) installation with Ubuntu?

I am using version 6.06.1-DESKTOP-AMD64.150. I am using an e-Machines
T6524 desktop which has the graphics controller on the motherboard and is comprised of the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset, which I believe to be the problem. The screen is being run in 640x480 resolution, which has the consequence of lopping off the buttons at the bottom of the screen. I have tried to use the "xrentr" (I believe) command, but the reply is that I can't change the screen resolution. There are several complicated solutions (at least complicated to me as this is my very first foray into Linux) which I have not had the courage to try as yet.
What text mode installion? And how do I get there?

there is an alternate cd which provides a text based installation.

I really recommend to get the lastest Feisty 7.04 version

this version supports AMD 64bit

Can you help with this problem?
