shut down icon missing shut down option

Asked by roly

oops I've been messing and somehow disabled the functionality of the shut down icon (red on/off switch top right on panel)

It now only offers to log out or switch user, no longer can I shut down or restart.

I disabled some bootup apps that seemed to be for laptops and bluetooth.

Tried adding the functionality back in and reset the apps I disabled, but no joy.

I know many of you aficionados out there could fix this quicker than it takes to point me in the right direction so sorry for troubling you.

Must say it's silly to play, but it really is the only way to learn...short of reading the 10000 page bible on Linux that is.

Having read the exploits of several thousand (How many? yeah well it seemed like it) other users with similar tales of lost functionality with their shutdown icon I can only assume it will not be an easy task.

I have tried all the simple stuff mentioned on the net and ruled out several command line suggestions.

Problem is Ubuntu allowed me to completely screw it up using the simple GUI interface, but seems adamant that I now have to pop the bonnet and remove the engine to fix the equivalent of a wing mirror I inadvertently knocked while polishing the hood...and what untold damage will I be doing then eh?

Apologies for this suggestion as you already know it won't work ADD TO PANEL-shut down, restart, switch user icon.

You may guess rightly that my sarcasm is hiding a deep frustration with this distro, if the GUI tweak can't be undone through the GUI, then there shouldn't be a GUI tweak in the first place and left in the realm of command line actions where a degree of knowledge is fundamental to starting any tweaks.

I'm off my soap box now, sorry for the rant, now preparing myself for the tirade of abuse from the unpaid volunteers who help make this frustrating OS what it is...peerless..as in. I wouldn't consider anything else. Just baking some humble pie and finding a tasty hat for consumption later no doubt.

Problem not solved, but I can suffer the grey semi-functioning icon.
