How do I get my gnome panel back?

Can someone please help me? I am new to Ubuntu. I have no experience with running code in a terminal. I have ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix on my EeePC 900a. Everything was working fine. I switched the desktop to "classic" mode. Moved the gnome panel to the bottom of the screen. I went to restart the netbook, because I had to change the bootloader back to Hard Disk, since I installed Ubuntu with a flash drive. When it loaded up, I had the desktop backround, the three application icons I had placed on the desktop before reboot, and nothing else. No gnome-panel. I've been right clicking all over the desktop, can't find it, can't find an option to restore it.

I don't understand why it would just disappear on it's own, so I'm pretty sure it must have been something I did that made it vanish. Can somebody please help me restore the gnome-panel. I don't want to pull a "noob" move and reinstall Ubuntu all together. I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thank you.

P.S When I open an application via desktop icon, There is no "X" in the upper right corner to close out of it. And my window borders arent the color I chose. Please help me.

Hmm, that sounds like your window manager isn't starting. I've forgotten the binary, but if you can open a terminal, you should be able try running a couple programs.

Try hitting Alt+F2 . If that brings up a Run Application box, you're good to go. Type in 'gnome-terminal' and then you'll have a terminal to try some things out.

From the terminal, if memory serves, you should just be able to type 'metacity<Enter>'. That will hopefully return your window borders and the 'X' buttons.

As to the panel, try typing 'gnome-panel<Enter>'. That should give you the panels pack.

The fact that they all went away, and didn't return even on reboot ... that's surprising, and not one that for which I have an explanation.

Perhaps try

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

?

* This tips work for the standart Ubuntu-gnome, I don't now if they work in Ubuntu Netbook Remix, so try them if no other solution works.

Open a Terminal (Applications - Accesories - Terminal) and introduce (copy&paste then Enter) comands above....

-If you want to recover your panels try:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel

- If you want to restore your panels to gnome defaults (as after installation out-of-the-box) try:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /
