This isn't a Gnome terminal problem... I had to report a bug to be able to access the internet, because both my panels are missing.

Asked by Da CalebMan

Ubuntu 9.04,

I may have deleted something in a Janitor's cleanup, because I have no access to either panels... they're both gone, and I don't know how to launch an application! I can open the terminal, via a shortcut key, but don't know many commands...

I noticed the grub-loader at boot up. Something I've never noticed before. So after I restarted, I launched recovery mode kernel, and did a repair, upgrade, and fschk.

there was no visible difference. could you please help me? This is urgent! I don't know how to use the computer without the panels...

You can start a panel by typing 'gnome-panel &' from the command line. You'll see some debugging text, but just hit enter a couple of times and then type 'exit'. If you close the terminal window by clicking the [x], your panel will close, so be sure to close it by typing 'exit'.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. OK here's what happened a member form a forum suggested typing a command, and the terminal said Gnome panels wasn't just disabled, it was uninstalled!

I typed the command it listed underneath to install Gnome panels, and after rebooting, they appeared...

I think I uninstalled it, by trying to uninstall Epiphany, and to do that I have to go through synaptic package manager, and uninstall ALL dependent apps. One listed was 'Ubuntu Desktop' I thought there was no way it would install my desktop, so I continued, got rid of it, and was done. After that however, I did a clean up using computer janitor, to make sure all was uninstalled.

Upon reboot, an applet: OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet had malfunctioned, and Ubuntu asked me if I wanted to delete it... I said no...

I know how to get another similar applet, by right clicking, and selecting: 'add to panel' from the gnome panel, and an alternate shutdown and Log in applet are listed. But not as good as the original.

How do I get it back?

Hey Da CalebMan,

Is the error on this forum post what you saw? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=619767

If so, it sounds like the following:

sudo aptitude install gnome-applets

will fix your issue with Fast User Switch Applet.

Can you help with this problem?
