Try to reset your GNOME settings to default. You can do this by deleting the directories .gconf* and .gnome* out of a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1)

# rm -rf .gconf*
# rm -rf .gnome*

Christoph

This solves the problem. I added application launchers, one by one, to the panel afterwards, since one of them caused the problem. However, I don't know which one caused it.
Thank you very much, Christoph!

After login to ubuntu I have long delay, then appears white square in the left corner, which later turned out contains info:
"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The last error message was:

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in."

After long time of waiting my desktop appears.

I've tried:
rm -rf .gconf
rm -rf .gnome
rm -rf .gnome_2
rm -rf .gnome_private,
but it does not helps.

What should I do to get back to normal loging?

I am having the same GNOME daemon starting problem, so I think this thread is not solved.

I have the same problem after upgrading to hardy heron. posted to various places without avail. I believe it has something to do with network manager now since my wireless works if this happens but does not if this error does not come up etc.
