On an empty desktop (without any other applications windows opened) press CTRL+ALT+F2 to get access to a pseudo terminal...

Make login with your user and password...

Then type:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then you can reboot your pc by typing:

sudo reboot

or simply restart the graphic layer by pressing:

ctrl+alt+bkspace ( not more active with the default configuration in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty )

Hope this helps
