System - About Ubuntu - Failed

Asked by Karl Järnhammer

When i try to play in Feisty 7.04, the files Ubuntu Sax.ogg and fables_01_01_aesop.spx from the examples directory, my computer freeze, no mouse, no keyboard. I have to reboot.
This happens when i install via live-cd and and also after full install.
In Edgy 6.10 on the same computer play those files as required.
Computer: Packard Bell iconnect 1900
900 MHz AMD-K7, the mainboard is a MSI MS-6340 ver 1
256 MB ram
Devise manager detect same hardware in Feisty 6.10 and Edgy 7.04

Any suggestions

Thanks for your question.

You probably don't have yelp installed.

Here are instructions how to find and install packages:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftwareManagement

I hope this helps.

For some reason I had assumed that 'help' files would be installed by default. however, on your suggestion I just went to the Synaptic Package Manager and searched for, found, and applied 'yelp' - problem solved. And now I feel quite stupid :-(

Thank you

Yelp is a package that should be installed by default. if it isnt then there may be a further problem.

Can you try to re-install ubuntu-desktop (if you are using Ubuntu / GNOME) or kubuntu-desktop (if you are using Kubuntu / KDE):-

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

It may re-download and re-install ubuntu-desktop and may also pull in other packages you were missing.

Though 'yelp' is now working I did as you suggested and a number of packages were found that it suggested I remove, 8 packages were then added and other stuff I didn't understand 'happened'. I saved all the terminal text if you would like to see it - it is long so perhaps it should not be posted here - advice please.....
On the removal thing I was prompted to type:
apt-get autoremove
which returned
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
And then I didn't know what to do. I tried 'Y' and got
bash: Y: command not found

The difference I can see is that my background screen and some other preferences have changed, and that the top menye bar is now orientated to the right instead of the left where it has always been before!! About Ubuntu 'yelp' still works :-)

You can paste long text to a pastebin such as http://pastebin.ubuntu-uk.org

The apt-get autoremove should be prefixed with sudo:-

sudo apt-get autoremove

Don't do it yet, until we have looked at your terminal text on the pastebin please.

OK - I put it all up at paste bin - hope I did it right. (Cool thing).

The problem on my PC was only with file fables_01_01_aesop.spx file -> black screen, no response from system: I had to shut down the PC the hard way.

Now the problem is gone: it was due to the graphic card settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

My graphic card is an Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME

My version of Ubuntu is Hardy 8.04.

This solved the problem for me:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

look for the device and insert the following lines instead of the one in the original file:
  Identifier "Generic Video Card"
  Driver "i810"
  BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
save, exit and logout (or whatever to reset)
