top menubar moved to left edge

Asked by Ben Gardiner

While I was handling the Dell monitor, the top menubar moved from top (line) position to left (column) position. Is there a way to fix this in Ubuntu or should I contact Dell? I have tried all the Dell buttons without finding anything about orientation of display, have tried Ubuntu Display but nothing there about how to place or move elements around the edges of the desktop screen.

Thanks for any possible help.

Ben

I had to empty the menu bar first, so my click would not simply start something on it. When there was some empty space, it was possible to click and drag.

On the incoming Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex" the panels are locked by default (there is a new option to lock them) so unwanted erroneous movement of the toolbars will disappear.

Hope this helps

An even better way is to right-click on an empty space in the menu bar (extreme left if it is contracted) which presents options to set the menu bar in any one of the four edges of the screen. You can also choose there to expand or contract the menu bar. This is the best way. I live and learn.

Just to clarify. You should click Properties in the menu that pops up when right-clicking an empty area of the bar. This is the only way of doing it now that things have updated. Inside properties you will find a value called Orientation. It should say top to get it to Ubuntu's defaults.
