The application that's responsible for these pop-up notifications is "notification-daemon"
I don't know of any way to completely disable this however if you'd rather not be notified of new updates in the taskbar you can disable this by doing the following:

Go to "System > Preferences > Sessions"

Under "Startup Programs" you could remove "update-notifier"

If you do this you will have to manually check for updates periodically to keep your system up to date.

I don't recommend you do this as there must be some better way to just suppress the annoying messages.
At first glance I couldn't find anything in gconf-editor that looked promising but maybe someone else will be able to give you a better answer.

I too hate the popups from the notification daemon !

This sort of UI interaction is best left on Windows where it belongs. GNOME really should not start implementing bad Microsoft UI ideas.

Ideally I would like to have a simple globally applied setting that all applications would respect which would allow me to turn off popups altogether.

Even worse is the popup telling me to click it to restart my computer which doesn't even have the option to say "No thankyou". I'll decide when I'm going to restart thank you very much.

So for now I've turned off update-notifier as the popups really get on my nerves. If I wanted this sort of continual bleating from the OS I'd run Windows :)

A question...

Re Ubuntu. 7.04.

When I am tired and irate, it's hard to figure things out, even more so when I don't know the exact name of the problem.

What happens, is that when I roll my mouse, over the menus, little descriptive pop-ups appear, telling me what the functions of the menu items actually are or do.

This drives me completely insane.

Does anyone know how to I get rid of these irritating "info-splats".

Actually in having just created this new term, come to think of it, they are like splats - splats of bird shit, all over the screen.

So how do I kill them off?

Can you help with this problem?
