if you still have a panel, just right click it choose "add to panel" and add window list or notification area... i am note quite sure what exactly you mean. if this does not work or you do not have any panel at all, feel free to ask again.

Check to see if gnome-panel is installed.
I had the same problem
I uninstalled evolution - and I think it removed gnome-panel.
So re-installing it solved it for me.
