Hello Luke:

at the outset,

Looks like you have messed up your ubuntu desktop..

Course to a terminal (Press cntrl + alt +f1 or f2 in the login screen) Or boot up in recovery mode (Usually 2nd option in grub menu)

and give the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop

and

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

and reboot your system..

sudo reboot

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.

Ok, i have managed to do it again and i think i know what is causing it.
I re-installed the desktop as you said and it work, but it also re-installed evolution mail, i dont use it and also for some reason, when evolution is running and i open the terminal, type top, it says that evolution is using 100% so i removed it from my computer. When i turned my computer on this morning, my desktop was as it was before, no icons or panels.
Does evolution mail need to stay installed for some reason, if not why is my desktop keep removing itself when i remove evolution mail

Thanks

Evolution mail is a dependent package on ubuntu-desktop I think, If evolution is causing problems then switch to thunderbird and stop using evolution....

Hello,

I have a medium level problem i guess with 8.04.1 Ubuntu, while installing the avant window navigator, the tutorial i looked up into, suggested me to erase both of my panels (superior and inferior) so i did. And it looked great for a couple of days. The problem was next day when my awn suddenly dissapeared when i closed the mozilla application. So now, i dont have anything in my desktop, and i mean anything, i can't find the way to get back either the panels or the awn.

I have consulted several pages where they recommend to use the sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop command and the reinstalling, and did not work, i also checked the gconftool-2 --shutdown command and did not worked either. I proved the rm -rf/.gconf/apps/panel and so commands and also did not work.

I am quite desperated because i cannot use my applications, except the office by opening a document and the internet by asking office's help. Please if someone could help me, i would be enourmous gratefull. Thak you.

Can you help with this problem?
