Workspace Switcher

I've been curious about something. Each time I switch workspaces a window pops up in the middle. Now what I'm curious about is if something is supposed to be shown in the window like, the workspaces. On my computer nothing shows up but some diagonal lines over a transparent background. Is something supposed to be there?
