I have 3x3 workspaces and switch using CTRL+ALT+Left & Right and Up & Down. It's useful because if you're in the middle workspace you can with one keypress get to any of the 8 surrounding workspaces very quickly. If you just have one row then you need to repeatedly press keys to get from one end to the other.

Are you running the Desktop cube special effect? it appears you cannot have more than one row if you use the cube, but without the cube, you can have up to 16 rows. Although why you'd want that many, I can't say!

Can you help with this problem?
