Use Restricted Driver Manager - System → Administration → Restricted Driver Manager

Nvidia is usually really easy to install. Just open system-admin-restricted driver manager and check the box. It should already know what you have and what to install. Once you hit apply it will download and install the driver. Activate the 3d desktop stuff by opening system-prefs-appearance, clicking on visual effects tab and then checking extra. There is more to tweak but that will get you started.

If you have installed the latest version (7.10) you should be given the option after first boot to install proprietary nvidia drivers.

If not then click on system then administration then software sources at which point you will be looking at a list. Put a tick in the box which mentions proprietary drivers and then you should be given the option to reload the list.

Once the list has reloaded go back to the system menu followed by administration and then enter the restricted drivers menu. You will then be given the option to install the nvidia drivers.

Hope this helps.

Wow, I'm a slow typer. Are you using regular Ubuntu? If so, you should have 3 menu items on the upper left of your screen. Click the system one, then admin then restricted driver manager.

Are you able to download the latest version 7.10? Lots of things have been improved since 6.06 one of those being the installation of display drivers.

→ in 6.06 is not restricted driver manager (why have you installed so old version?)

Install package nvidia-glx (via Synaptic or in Terminal (Appliactions → Accesories → Terminal) 'sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx') and then run 'sudo nvidia-xconfig')

No worries. I'm still a noob myself and require help a lot more often than I'm able to help others.
