Possible to hide top & bottom bars w/ keyboard shortcut or launcher in Classic desktop view?

Asked by Si Dedman

[ubuntu 12.04 LTS classic view]
I've got a problem whereby, in full screen video in VLC or media player, the top & bottom bars re-appear after ~30 seconds, and continue to do so 30 seconds after I restore fullscreen each time. I've raised this here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12332013#post12332013
In the meantime, I've searched & found that one can auto-hide the bars (alt+super+right click > properties > auto hide).
Would it be possible to create a keyboard shortcut that would toggle auto-hide for both with one stroke?
Or a launcher which would do it?
Or two launchers/shortcuts?
Or four?

Thanks in advance!

In VLC do you have the always ontop option set?

I didn't, but i do now. No change, unfortunately. Good thought though.

No longer required: randomly found this, which cures the root problem.
