Music player won't play anything!

Asked by Thor Karlsson

Hi

I just installed ubuntu. Did the updates... and tried to play some music. A little window popped up on first opening Music Player asking to create a directory or something, for importing files to.
It also said it wasn't necessary to do it now and i could do it later.
So I said I'd do it later.
Don't know if this is related to my problem.
I can't seem to find where to adjust my preference for a music library directory folder.

When I try to load a file through Music- Import file ... I get a message box with the title:

Error loading files into library

Then....

the following files could not be loaded

Then...

Error: The file is not an audio stream
File: file:///home/thor/shaft.mp3

    .....For example.....

Hope you can help

and that this is the right place to ask

Thanks

Thor Karlsson

MP3 files can't be played until you install a couple of extra bits. See this page for an explanation on why:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You didn't mention what version of Ubuntu you installed, but there are instructions for the different releases on that page. For example, on Dapper (the latest), you need to use Synaptic or the apt-get program to install the following additional packages:

gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-pitfdll
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

Let us know if you have any problems following those directions and I can walk you through them step by step.

Can you help with this problem?
