No GUI, only shortcust on the desktop

Asked by Ubuntunewbie

Running 10.4 and when I tried to update it said I had 2 package management systems. So I uninstalled apt-get from the command line. and still had the desktop menu. Then when I tried to install some software, there is no package management system??? I shut down the system and came back later to install the apt-get package system and now there is no gui menu system available. The only things available are the items I saved to the desktop. Is there a way to reload the apt-get and get the gui menu back. Newbie here so keep it simple. Thanks.

if you press CTRL+ALT+T you should then be able to install gnome-panel

If you don't get anywhere and opt for a clean install, you should install a clean install of Precise. Lucid desktop is EOL in April next year
