I have icons left from applications I have removed(typically a red circle with a line through it) how can I remove them ? I have tried to cancel but all I get for actions are "launch" and "properties"

Copy the line I gave and press CTRL+ALT+T
Paste the command to the terminal and hit ENTER

I did not get a result the reply was

Look at the command you ran, then look at the command I gave. Pay attention to SPACES.

The second choice is what it looks like
as for a simple search would have shown me that, a simple question in english would have assisted
I think I will live with the icons I seem to be conversing in a different language
