Status panel at top of screen now has bad background color, how to clear it?

Asked by Rodney

The status panel at the top of the desktop screen ( I'm using version 10.04) used to be easy to read, a white background with the applications, Places, System ,time, etc. easy to read. Now it has a blue background filled with short horizontal black lines makeing it very difficult to read. If I hover the mouse over the choices, it clears up for that area only. Is there a way to get this to have the white background only?

Hello,

I don't have 10.04 anymore and it's hard to remember. So I found this link for you:
http://blog.sudobits.com/2011/03/04/how-to-change-theme-in-ubuntu-10-04-10-10/

I think you should follow their hint:
Go to System->Preferences->Appearance and click on theme tab

In 12.04 there are some themes which don't change the top panel colour, but for instance, the "Radiance" theme has a light colour (some light grey-brown I would say). The menu would be found with right-click on the empty background of the screen and selecting "Change desktop background". There are also other themes available for instance with the package gnome-tweak-tool (found in the Ubuntu Software Center), but unfortunately those themes don't change the top panel menu colour. So you would have to play with 2 moods to obtain a custom theme AND a readable top menu.

Hope this helps, have a nice day or evening
Enrico

PS: sorry for the mistakes, hope you will find a correct "color" regardless of the spelling I used. One should alway read carefully before submitting :-)

I solved this by right clicking in the status bar and then choosing properties>background>use system scheme.
Now everything is clear and easy to read. I do not know how it ever changed as I do not recall doing anything to foul it up before. Thanks for every ones suggestions.
