compiz-fusion took my panels

I was messing around in compis config settings manager when I set number of desktops from 1 to 4, ad that made both panels on desktop disappear. now I'm lost in some sort of nomansland unable to do anything that doesn't have a hotkey. Of course I tried resetting the above but still no panels...

If you enter "gnome-panel" (without the quotes) in a terminal is there any output that shows what's going wrong?
