I have 10.10 installed on an Acer netbook. Somehow I got a blank black rectangular shaped panel on each side of the screen. It expands from top to bottom as the curser touches it. I would like to remove them to give me more screen space...

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a

*IMPORTANT*: *When you send ANY email message, INSERT the email addresses
in the "Bcc:" line - INSTEAD OF THE "To:" line. (If you have a Bcc line) If
you forward this email, PLEASE delete any previous address history at the
top of the message, which includes my email address!! These 2 actions help
prevent SPAMMERS from mining the addresses and propagating VIRUSES. I ALWAYS
try to delete yours ... PLEASE try to do the same for me, before you send it
on. Thanks....
