Bridge playing software

Asked by Jim Hall

Does anyone have bridge-playing software for Linux? WINE doesn't seem to understand Bridge Baron, and I use it to practice my game.

If you have a Windows install disk, you could try QEMU which lets you run a Windows environment inside linux, like VMWare or Virtual PC. The Windows environment would live on your hard drive as one big file. I've had varying success with applications that Wine doesn't seem to like.

There are a few Bridge focused software packages available in Ubuntu. I searched the Synaptic Package Manager (System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manage) for bridge and found these files, that might be useful:

deal - bridge hand generator
dealer - bridge hand generator
floater - free Internet bridge client

You might try to install one (or more) of them.

I installed floater through synaptic. It didn't appear to create a gnome menu, so I launched it by typing ALT-F2, typing floater in the run application dialog and clicking the Run button.

If you like it, you can create a gnome menu item with the Alacarte Menu Editor (Applications --> Accessories --> Alacarte Menu Editor).

I hope this helps,

Good Luck.
