Dead space in top panel

Asked by JohnMcG

On my gnome-panel, there is dead space next to the logout icon. I cannot move anything to that space.

Also, on occasion there either the top or bottom panel is missing upon login or (once) the top panel was on the right side of the screen, This always resolves with a re-login, but not the problem above.

Did you unlock the applets you are trying to move?

Yes, and I can move them around.

That would possibly be the notification area (like the systray in windows) there is a VERY small spot on the left that you can right click on to bring up the move/lock/properties window (it's a small vertical line on my panel).

If you right click on a empty spot on your panel, and click properties you can change the location of the panel without having to re-login.

Sorry I don't know why the panel changes location on your system, but this might be a possible workaround;

Start with the panel on the bottom, uncheck expand, click and drag the small panel to the top, then recheck expand. I don't know why this works but it is reported to. If it does work for you you can start the bottom panel on the side and repeat the operation to get the bottom panel to "stick".

Hope this helps.
