'minimised' apps disapear from screen & cannot be found...

hello Gang, hope someone can help, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious...
I open an application (yahoo, documents, etc.) then when I minimise it, they disappear off screen & I cannot re-open them, forcing me to open another app. I know they are there, because when I shut down,they all pop up!

What desktop do you use? There is a window list applet you can add to the panel to allow easy switching which probably has simply been removed. The apps ARE running, they just aren't shown on the panel
