problem installing downloads

I have downloade limewire(for my music) and also Thunderbird for E-Mail. I am having problems extracting and installing as I am not sure what to do or look for. I am very new to this. Please, can some one guide me??

Instead of downloading and installing applications manually, use your package manager to install them.

I am new to Ubuntu and Linux, I am definitely going to make a switch from Microsoft Windows. I need help on installaing Wine. I used the Synaptic Manager to download wine, but I do not know where to find it or install it. I cannot find it in any of the menus. What do you do after you download Wine with the Synaptic Manager.

Thanks for your help. You guys are to be commended for your dedication and product support. After I become familiar with Ubuntu, I will try to contribute in some way.
