somehow the bar on top went awol.....the one where you get new window, tab and where my shortcuts to different sites were !?

I had done that

Are you referring to firefox's top bar? If so, it was removed as a UI redesign in firefox 4.

Well, if I have the right idea about what you need, then you can disable the global menu interaction addon for firefox using these instructions:

(scroll down until you see the "firefox" section, then follow the instruction)

I am not using natty myself yet, so I cannot confirm this will work.

apologies...it was the bookmarks toolbar that I was looking for and when I found full screen mode I got it back.
