0I upgraded to ubuntu 11.4... But it messed up everything

Asked by Kes Mckinney

I once had ubuntu 10.10 and and everything was fine i had my sidebar on the screen with all the applications and movie player etc all the main screen..Now since i upgraded everythings gone as in there is nothing on my screen. The only way i can get on anything is if i plug in my mp3 player and then a box appears saying what i want to do with it. It seems that the sidebar is there but i just cant see anything.. My issue is, Is there a way to "downgrade" back to Ubuntu 10.10 and get everything back to normal?

To "downgrade" you will need to reinstall. I also suggest you try a clean install of natty. Clean installs have significantly fewer issues than upgrades. You may want to create a new user to see if that is ok (implying settnigs from Maverick are causing the issue).

Do you have Unity or Classical window manager ?
If you want to revert to Classical, type Ctrl+Alt+T to get a terminal, and then gdmsetup. Set window manager from "Ubuntu" to "Classical without effect".
If you still have classical, but any top/bottom menu bar, boot on 2nd line, recovery mode to get temporarily a working environment. Reinstall proprietary driver, reset window manager to "Classical without effect" even if it is its current state. And reboot again.
When you get a working environment, you can:
1-download Natty ISO image and reinstall with "upgrade" option in first Ubiquity menu. This will reinstall system files while leaving user files untouched.
2-download Maverick ISO image, and reinstall with "manual partitioning". UNCHECK FORMAT BOX and mount folder "/" on ext4. As (1), user files will be untouched.
Don't hesitate top post if you need more explanation.
