Unable to use multiple desktops in natty. Compiz window cube and rotate not working. Minimize, maximize and close icons missing.

Asked by gevie

Since upgrading to Natty I have the following problems:

1 In Unity the top bar is on top of the tabs and Minimize, maximize, close icons.

2. I have set up seven desktops in compiz fusion however I cannot switch between them.

3. Compiz fusion cube and cube rotate does not work.

4. I have switched back to the gnome desktop and the above problems still exist.

Could you confirm that (1) occurs also with "Classical" desktop ?
When mouse is on top, Unity displays application menu at left.
When mouse is not on top, it displays application name.
At right, it displays classical icons.
It's normal behavior, made to save vertical space on netbook.

Yes it still occurs with the classical (Gnome) desktop. However using the classical version gives me the opportunity to move the bar to the bottom of the screen thereby allowing the tabs and icons to appear(if there were icons).

This will reset Unity to a usable state.
Login to Unity (Ubuntu session).
Switch to tty (virtual console text mode only): ctrl+alt+f1
Login with username and passwd.
Type:
unity --reset

Switch back to desktop: ctrl+alt+f7
or reboot from tty:
sudo reboot.

# Unity session.
Next find out if hardware supports Unity.
Open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Type and post output:
/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

sudo lshw -C video

# Compiz.
To use cube and rotate install CCSM:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

## Note this conflicts with simple-ccsm, in case remove it before installing CCSM.

Open the dash: super+a
Type: compizconf
When it displays CCSM as first symbol hit 'Enter' or click on the symbol.

Go to settings.
Untick automated plugin sorting.
Move 'wall' and 'static switcher' from right to left.
Move 'cube' and 'rotate', maybe also 'workspace switcher' from left to right.
Enable automated plugin sorting.

## Workspace switcher does conflict with 'static switcher'.

Automated plugin sorting is there to avoid conflicts between keybindings and other functions.
Successive and carefully enable anything else you like.
When there is a usable configuration make a backup of the profile by exporting it to a place in /home/user. The file needs to have the ending .profile.

Sam:

I followed your instructions. I did get unity to reset. However when I tried to get compiz working it didn't work. I installed 11.04 along side of 10.10. I have went back to using Maverick. &*$^# unity.

Thanks for trying to help me. If they get natty and unity more user friendly I may try it again or I will stay with Maverick or move to Mint.

Thanks for trying to help. I can't get it to work. I have went back to Maverick for now. If and when unity gets more user friendly I may try it again. However for now I will stay with maverick or may go to the new Mint which doesn't use unity.
