Updated prev. version of Ubuntu 64bit, to 11.04 64bit. Have normal desktop with prev. icons, but cannot access tool bars etc.

Asked by cleckie@xnet.co.nz

Have complete desktop but no toolbars are visible. All previous desktop icons are visible and operate OK, but am not able to see tool bars either top or bottom. The home icon which is supposed to be visible at top LH corner is not there. I had set the toolbars to auto hide on previous version, and opted to keep previous settings during this installation. Maybe this created a problem. I do not have access to any of the menus shown on the upper bar in previous version!!! HELP!!!

Hi kiwi, I am no expert, but I don't think Unity has panels as in Gnome. I am assuming what you are calling tool bars are panels, ie the ones you click onto and you can add bits and pieces. I think with the home icon you hover your pointer over the top left bar and it will appear. If you want the Gnome desktop, from what I can understand, you can load the classic Gnome desktop by logging out and down the bottom of the screen you will find the classic gnome. You can also load it by clicking up the top right of the screen when you are logged in, the system management is up there. A lot of what I am telling you is from memory and bits and pieces I have read. I updated to Natty just after the release, but I didn't do a very good job. Too much beer!!! I reverted back to my old os but will give Natty another try later on. In regard to your screen lock, have you unlocked lock screen in screen saver? Greg

Do you want Unity or Classical (gnome-panel/metacity) window manager ?
What is your graphic card ?
To revert to classical window manager, type Ctrl+Alt+T, then gdmsetup and replace "Ubuntu" by "Classical without effects".
