lost display of menu options on the desktop

Asked by Rodney

My desktop no longer displays the choice of APPLICATIONS PLACES SYSTEM at the upper left hand part of the screen. The only way I can get to these is to now do an ALT F1 and then I can select the proper path. I can not figure out what I did to lose them. The icon for selecting the web (Firefox) is still there and brings up the web when I click on it. How do I restore these choices to the desktop, please. I am using Ubuntu 10.4 and it is up to date with all updates installed.

To reset the gnome panel to defaults, type this in a terminal:

 gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel
