unwanted changes to Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by donaldt

I made some changes to my Ubuntu 10.10 installation and lost all the programs. I don't have my home file, the ability to shut down/re-boot, the blue tooth logo, the wireless log (on/off) or any of the other programs available. Also, my screen background changed, etc. I have been able to retrieve the upper border black strip, but it is not populated with any of the installed programs or categories. I believe this happened while trying out and removing screenlets apps and updates.

Is there a way to go back and re-configure the computer the way it was last week, say on Wednesday?

Thanks!

gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel

Will reset your panels to defaults.

OOPS! I spoke to soon. When I re-booted I can't get past the terminal
screen. Everything was working OK when I shut down. I believe it needs
a password to launch but it is not asking for one. All I get is the
terminal cursor.

How do I re-set to launch so I don't have to enter the password every time?

thanks...

Thank you for responding. Yes, I understand. Let me explain.

I used your script to fix the problem I had. Once that was done I did a
re-boot. I have a dual boot system using windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10.
Grub worked fine but Ubuntu opened with a 3" x 5" white window in
terminal mode. It had donald@donald $ I believe it is now looking for
a password. Prior to the re-configure back to original settings I had a
log on that did not require a password, but believe returning to factory
defaults is now wanting one.

How do I get by the terminal screen and gain access to the gui gnome
screen and set up the password by-pass once again?

When I turn the computer off I get a brief look at the normal start up
screen just before the computer shuts down.

I really appreciate your assistance. This is a simple problem, but I
don't know how to solve it.
