Theme of top panel and task bars seems like very old ubuntu: bug or VirtualBox related?

Asked by Joris Van den Bossche

I was testing Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity running in VirtualBox 4, but the theme/layout of the top panel and of the task bars of applications looks like it's coming from Ubuntu 4.10 or something like that (grey with very ugly layout and icons). I didn't change anything of the layout (it was like this already the first start up, and also with the live CD).

I wondered if this could be a bug (and that I could report it), or that it would rather be a problem related to the fact that I'm running it in VirtualBox?

I am experiencing the same issue, however I believe it is a problem with VirtualBox and not Ubuntu. My distro is a raw disk installation on a secondary drive to allow me to boot to Ubuntu both natively and through VirtualBox. I have not yet seen this issue appear when I boot directly to Ubuntu but it occurs most of the time (although curiously it works properly every once in a while) when running though VB.

I found this post (http://www.webupd8.org/2010/12/how-to-test-ubuntu-1104-with-unity-in.html) which states that the following command will fix the theme issue:

killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon && gnome-settings-daemon

It seems that this problem is be due to the VB video drivers but I'm not really sure how to fix it. There are a couple of bugs already reported with Unity (748400 & 737320), although I have seen this issue booting into both Unity and Classic desktops.
