This does not work. Usually what happens is on booting up the ubuntu screen ie purple default contains my desktop folders. It no longer does. I still have to go to places/desktop to access. I don't know how to boot up into Ubuntu start up screen. All help would be helpful. Thanks Phil

Sounds like your gnome files are messed up. Below is a link for basically removing the gnome files and starting over. The problem they are dealing with is different from yours, but I think the same solution applies.
