Program Installation Error

Asked by Peter

Hello,

I'm a complete novice who (with help) struggled through Ubuntu installation from a download. I have since downloaded Opera and when I attempt to install it, I get this very enigmatic error message " Error: Dependency is not satisfiable L1BQt3-MT". Can anyone advise me what the problem is here and how to resolve it?

TIA

Peter

Can you describe how you attempted to install Opera? Did you know that you can get a package (.deb file) specifically designed for Ubuntu from www.opera.com? The latest supported version of Ubuntu on their website is 6.10, but it should work with 7.04. If not, you can always try installing the Debian Etch 4.0 package; Debian Etch is very similar to Ubuntu 7.04.

Hi Rouben,

Thanks for your quick reply! I have downloaded the .deb file to my desktop and right-clicked on it, selecting "Open with GDebi Package Installer" and I almost immediately get this message. The only other option is to open with the Archive manager and this takes me nowhere positive. Maybe I need to reprogram my Windows-trained mind? ;-)

Thanks for any advice you may be able to offer!

Cheers,

Peter

Do you recall which .deb file you downloaded? If you got the Ubuntu 6.10 version, can you please try the Debian 4.0 (Etch) package instead?

Actually, forget what I just said. :) Can you please try this package? http://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/923/final/en/i386/static/opera-static_9.23-20070809.1-qt_en_i386.deb

Thanks Rouben, that worked just fine and that success is very reassuring. I'm hoping that the problem is just one of compatibility and I'll hopefully recognize the problem if I run into it again.

Again, many thanks!

Peter

Anytime! I'm very glad to have been able to help you. The issue was that of dependency on another package which isn't installed by default in Ubuntu. By using the "static" package, you avoided the dependency problem altogether.
