Please click on a blank area on the panel, click add to panel, then scroll down to indicator applet then add.

My apolgies Angus in my haste to respond to your question I had not read it 'completely' and now I see you have tried to right click and add. So let's try this :

Run this in a terminal:
gnome-volume-control-applet
( will give you back the volume control )

Click on System>Preference>Startup Applications. When that loads, click on Add, then add the following:

Name: Volume control Command: gnome-volume-control-applet Comment: Launch volume control applet

That will launch the applet every time you start up and give you the icon in the notification area.

You might also find that what you are looking for is now called the "Indicator Applet", which is why it wasn't as simple as it sounds like it should be.

Larry,
Thankyou very, very much!! I'd found another control for my vol. but was not happy with it and then realized my mail icon was gone too.
"Indicator applet" it was ( of course).
Thanks again
Angus.
