gnome-panel crashes when launching applications

Asked by Leonor Palmeira

Dear all,

my gnome-panel crashes silently whenever I launch an application (and restarts). I suspect this comes from not being able to find the correct /path for the given application. Indeed, for my personal gnome-panel icons, if I change the path in the Properties to the full path of the application, the application is launched smoothly without crashing gnome-panel.

Any idea on how to fix this, as I am totally unable to launch any application through the gnome menu...

I did a recent upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS, so it probably comes from this, but I haven't got a clue.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Leonor.

Please give us the starting and the not starting (crashing) path...

Well, the problem is that I don't know which path the gnome menu uses to access a given application. For Firefox, for example, if I create a quick launcher on the gnome-panel with firefox (Properties>Command> firefox %u), this crashes. However, if I change the command in the Properties to "/usr/bin/firefox %u", everything runs smoothly.

I was thinking it might be due to a badly defined $PATH somewhere, but I don't know where this is defined.

Not sure it's a $PATH problem afterall...
The quick launcher for gnome-terminal works perfectly when the Command in the Properties is either "gnome-terminal" or "/usr/bin/gnome-terminal".
Should I report this as a bug?

Please open a terminal and type:

echo $PATH

I am not on my computer right now, but /usr/bin is indeed included in my $PATH.

I am back on my computer, here is my $PATH:

/home/palmeira/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games

When I reduce my $PATH to:

export PATH=/usr/bin

the gnome-menu still crashes when launching Firefox (or any other app) which is at

/usr/bin/firefox

Is it possible that the gnome-menu looks for apps in another directory? How can I get access to the path used by gnome-menu to launch an application?
