Desktop items missing

When I start up the program the desktop opens but all the menu bars are missing. I just have a screen with only the desktop background filling the screen. I can not "right click!" on the desktop . The tabs for email and internet etc are missing.

if you press ALT+F2 do you get a run dialogue?

If so run: gnome-terminal

then in the terminal run:

gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel
