accepted my first update for 10.04 last night now computer doesn't work screen comes up with no menu's can't do to much with this !

Asked by John R Doherty

last night I had the update manager install the packages. Turned on computer today and I get a nice picture with no menus.
I cannot access anything. Last week I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 one computer won't work because I have a Creative Technology Rivi TNT card. I used an older computer and got every thing working. I thought I did until I updated. I have been running 8.04 for years and I thought that after all this time the system would be improved. I guess I was wrong I have had nothing
but trouble with this since I upgraded. I would like to get my video card to work with 10.04 and I would like to be able to access my menu's. I will think about accepting an updates in the future.

Thank you John Doherty

Hello,

Perhaps you could get it all to work again normally if you do a clean install rather than an upgrade.

Regards,

Allan :)

I'm not an expert in graphic. Best could be to backup "/home" directory on an external media, do a clean install, and getting back "/home" directory. Trying to repair can be very time consuming.

How to restore gnome panels and toolbars disappered on Ubuntu

A) When you see the clean desktop without toolbar:
- press alt-f2 a little window will come in fron of you
- ins this window field type:

gnome-terminal

Then press enter a terminal window will come in front of you:

type (a single row a time then press enter) :

gconftool –-recursive-unset /apps/panel;
rm -rf $HOME/.gconf/apps/panel;
pkill gnome-panel

B) if you cannot get access to terminal using method A then:
- press ctrl + alt + F2 you will get a pseudo terminal black screen in front of you
- Make login with your user and password (when you type the password you will not see any screen chars, so type in then press enter)
- then when you get access, type (a single row a time then press enter) :

gconftool –-recursive-unset /apps/panel;
rm -rf $HOME/.gconf/apps/panel;
pkill gnome-panel

Then press ctrl + alt + F7 to return to your desktop

Hope this helps
