wired ethernet connection 10.04

Asked by Peter

In 10.04 the wired Ethernet connection for non-admin users has vanished. We are in the habit of turning off the modem when not using the Internet.
Non-admin users had an icon with several curves and a red exclamation through it on the top gnome panel.
By turning on the modem and then clicking on the icon and then clicking on auto Ethernet connection was enabled.
Non-admin users have the privilege of connecting to the Internet and Ethernet networks.
What has happened?
The icon is still there for admin users.

Hi Peter,

do the following steps, to get that icon.
right click on panel\
add to panel
"notification area" from the list
if the application exists, but just the icon has gone
 this will do
else
NetworkManager-Applet

Hi Alpesh,

The notification area already exists for all users, but only my admin account shows the up/down arrow (Wired network connection 'Auto eth0' active) whereas it used to be shown for all users. I think this changed in a recent 10.04 update.

NetworkManager-Applet is an invalid terminal command in 10.04

peter@peter-desktop:~$ NetworkManager-Applet
NetworkManager-Applet: command not found

Thanks,
Peter

Please open a terminal and type

nm-applet --sm-disable

Then you need to add this command to System→Preferences→Startup Applications

Hope this helps

Hi Marco,

As I said earlier the applet has and still does work for admin user but not for non-admin users.

Non admin users have nm-applet --sm-disable in Startup Applications
I tried changing this to nm-applet but doesnt work then tried NetworkManager-Applet but still doesnt work.

I am giving up on it and will leave the modem turned on permanently until Ubuntu or Debian or kernel developers hopefully put it back as it was a few weeks ago. I wish they would test software in the laboratory instead of worldwide.

Thanks,
Peter

The latest updates have restored the panel to what it used to be. The icon has reappeared for non admin users.
