Have your install the hardware drivers in system >> administration >> hardware drivers for your display card?

I have the same problem now, but it used to work just fine... could it be the latest vesion of ubuntu?

You may want to look at bug #439448 if you're seeing duplicate, partially displayed, or missing icons on some (most in my case) boots of your system.
