the transparency of notification area applet doesnt work.

I am using ubuntu 7.04 with compiz fusion installed, and everything works fine except the transparency of gnome panel applets (notification area, clock, weather)

AFAIK, the Gnome Panel does not support ARGB transparency, only fake transparency (ie. copying the desktop background). There are also problems with transparency in tray icons.

For almost-replacement with more eye-candy you could try Avant Window Navigator (https://launchpad.net/awn), but the project is not really mature.

but fake transparency also doesn't work with applets. i've tried to put transparent png image as background as well and got no effect.

yeah its a known bug of the gnome panel and its unfortunate for people who want a transparent panel. there is no fix as far as i know
