you should download the DEB version of the Yahoo Messenger Files, and if you are in dapper, just dobble click and then click on install .

if in breezy, do this

sudo dpkg -i FILENAME.deb

Thanks for your quick response.

However, I have no idea what "dapper" or "breezy" is.
I have been using Windows XP and my home was struck by lightning.
My PC was flickering very fast and I had no control over it. I tried to
re-install Windows XP, but after 6 times it would not install.
I installed Umbuntu with Linux and was able to search the Web.
I have never used Linux before and I do not know the terms used or the
functions with this system.
I am able to navigate the web, but that is about all. I cannot play DVDs
because
Totem movie player does not have the needed plugins .

Sorry, but I'm a "Mental Midget" when it comes to this system.

Thanks again for your quick response.

Dapper and Breezy are codenames for Ubuntu releases. Ubuntu Dapper is
the latest version 6.06LTS and Breezy is the previous version 5.10. If
you try double clicking the file you downloaded it will either open a
program called "Archive Manager" or it will install the application for you.

If it opens "Archive Manager" then you will need to open a terminal and
type "sudo dpkg -i filename.deb" swapping "filename" with the actual
name of the file you downloaded.

You don't need to install Yahoo Messenger. There is an instant messanger program installed in Ubuntu called "GAIM" that can do Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and any other instant messaging service you can think of.

Thanks for your reply. I was able to figure this out and get it
working. l still am having problems navigating the system
and understanding how to download different items.
I do not understand the technical phrases in Ubuntu. I
am searching for sources to explain these terms in such a
way that I can understand.

Thanks again,

The documents at https://help.ubuntu.com/ (particularly the Ubuntu desktop guide) may help.

Also see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingFromWindows

There's a list of windows programs and their linux equivalents here: http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html#1

I have DL the Deb version of yahoo messenger but it wont install, it says i have to log in as a root first and type in ; "dpkg -1 ymessenger_1.0.4_1_i386.deb" then run the package i got from the site. my question is how do i "do" the first part because otherwise it wont install. it gives me error message of "dependency is not satisfiable: libgdk-pixbuf2". am i doing something wrong or did i get the wrong installer?

Russell, you might want to open a new ticket for problems you have otherwise they may go unnoticed.

There are two answers to your question. One is, don't install Yahoo instant messenger, GAIM (which can be found under Applications --> Internet is able to connect to Yahoo - and is arguably better supported.

Secondly if you really want to install yahoo instant messenger then before you do the dpkg -i you need to do:-

sudo apt-get install libgdk-pixbuf2

To satisfy the dependency.

We don't have to install the Messenger.
In stead, use this web version.
Save it in Favorites, so we can use it on daily basis.
