WARNING: modinfo for module wl failed: ERROR: modinfo: could not find module wl -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01) not working using bcmwl-kernel-source on Lenovo S10 netbook in Ubuntu 9.10
I have just installed Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 on Lenovo S10 netbook.
The wireless network adapter does not work without proprietary driver, so I tried installing that with the program under System > Administration > Hardware Drivers.
But the install failed. I got an error telling me to look in the file jockey.log. I did, and it makes no sense to me.
Below is the last lines from this file:

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread
Regards,
Mark

According to the following link, you might have to do a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10:
http://
A similar bug, without any solution, is described here:
https:/
Hopefully, someone else can give you a better suggestion.
Or you can try booting a previous Ubuntu kernel (older than 2.6.31-17-generic) and then run the following commands:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source
Then reboot and retest wireless using the older kernel.

This really, really sucks. Without wireless network access, a netbook is pretty much useless.

My problem is not solved. Don't know why Launchpad says solved right now...
I just wanted to add that there are two drivers available in Hardware Drivers:
1: Broadcom B43 wireless driver
2: Broadcom STA wireless driver
Which one is supposed to work?
Before I reinstalled, the STA one was working just fine.

Your Terminal output while using kernel 2.6.31-14-generic shows what the problem there is:
"Error! Your kernel source for kernel 2.6.31-14-generic cannot be found at
/lib/modules/
Installing initial module"
This means you need to install the following packages first using the following commands:
sudo aptitude install linux-headers-
sudo aptitude install linux-source-2.6.31
After that, try the other installation commands for bcmwl-kernel-source while using kernel 2.6.31-14-generic

To be clear: you should be using the bcmwl-kernel-source driver package, which contains the Broadcom STA drivers for your kernel.

Does this mean that I will only have wireless in 2.6.31.14?

Same error as before, so I will give the same answer:
Your Terminal output while using kernel 2.6.31-17-generic shows what the problem there is:
"Error! Your kernel source for kernel 2.6.31-17-generic cannot be found at
/lib/modules/
This means you need to install the following packages first using the following commands:
sudo aptitude install linux-headers-
sudo aptitude install linux-source-2.6.31

I did just run your two commands. It installed the packages.
Then I went to Hardware Drivers and installed the STA driver. However, it still produces an error:

I thought I should add uname:
~ $ uname -a

The only thing left to suggest is to try a clean install using the Linux Mint 8 LiveCD.
You can get the Linux Mint 8 .iso image here:
http://
It is based on Ubuntu and might provide out-of-the-box support for your wireless card.
Try testing wireless during the Linux Mint 8 LiveCD session.

I just tried Mint Linux. Downloaded the Mint KDE Live CD. I installed the STA driver under Hardware Drivers. It worked fine. Even without reboot.
Now, is there any way for me to make this work in Ubuntu? Shouldn't this be considered a bug in Ubuntu, since it works fine in Mint?

Yes, please set this thread to "solved", as you have a workaround for the issue.
Then please report the bug using this link:

I do not have a workaround. This still doesn't work in Ubuntu. How do I make it work in Ubuntu? Can I copy some files from Mint to Ubuntu?

I don't know which package to file this bug under. It really sucks that I cannot report bugs without knowing the package. It should be possible to report bugs to some 'triage' package, then people who know more about Ubuntu can put it in the relevant package.

Try linking the bug to the jockey package, which is what was done in the following bug report:

The following worked for me:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo aptitude install linux-headers-
sudo modprobe wl
