Wireless LAN USB Fritz WLAN stick - ID 057c:6201 AVM GmbH WLAN USB v1.1 - not working in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by Rob Frerejean

I have build in Wireless LAN in my laptop. It goes up to 54 Mbit. I have a USB Fritz WLAN stick and that one goes up to 125 Mbit. I tried everything, but can´t access my USB stick. How can I deactivate my build in WLAN and use my stick?

I have a switch on my laptop to power off internal WLAN, but then the stick is powered off too.

Try deactivating your built-in wireless card in the BIOS.

Hi Rob,
Network-manager is able to handle multiple WLAN devices so there is no need of disabling built-in for stick to work, maybe your stick is not being recognized.
Can you unplug/plug the stick run a dmesg on terminal and post here the last(10 or so) lines of the output? That should tell us how the device is being recognized.

If everything fails, then you could try to install it with ndiswapper

Hi Rob,

I hope you also understand German ;-)

The following link is extremely interesting (I think) and shows which AVM Fritz! drivers work with which versions of Ubuntu:

http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/FRITZ!WLAN_USB_Stick

The table shows that - due to regressions in the kernel ?? - only Ubuntu 6.06 (!!) works with native AVM Fritz! Linux drivers and wicd network manager. Newer releases of Ubuntu show issues.

Even if we get your FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick (Stick-ID 057C:6201) to work, I think it will only work at 54 Mbit speeds, not at 125 Mbit. I think it is a better idea to try to get the built-in wireless working instead......

So I personally recommend removing the Fritz! usb stick from your pc, enabling built-in wireless in the BIOS, rebooting and then sending us the output of the following command (while keeping the pc connected to the router using a LAN cable):

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Using the output from that command, we can continue with analyzing your built-in wireless issue....

Or is your built-in wireless already working fine?

Regards,

Mark

Hi I don't have wireless Lan inbuilt, only the Wland stick, does this mean I won't be able to browse the internet unless I put the laptop on the leash (the lan cable)?

Can you help with this problem?
