3G ZTE MF636 USB MODEM INTERNET CONNECTION :
1- The above modem is connected to internet as follows.
The Country: TURKEY
The Service Provider: AVEA
The system: Ubuntu 9.10 installed of many pc's and Notebook of wide range of RAM &Mhz.
2- Install the modem after openning settles. After about 30 sec.
To see your modem is connected, enter ” lsusb” to see the usb connections'list.
İt shows:
user@user-desktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 19d2:2000 ONDA Communication S.p.A.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05e3:0660 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 2.0 Hub

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 05e3:0604 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 1.1 Hub
user@user-desktop:~$
ONDA is the Modems Marketting Co.
The number 2000 before ONDA tells us that the modem is not ready to be used yet.
So, we enter “sudo eject sr2” . Then enter your “password”.
HERE ONE THING IS VERY IMPORYANT: If your computer have 2- CD drives,
you should enter sr2, if 1- CD drive, sr1. This is because “sr0” commands CD drive no1,
where as “sr1” commands CD drive no2. Sr2 is dedicated to the usb modem.
Since I have 2 CD drives; I enter “ sudo eject sr2”.
user@user-desktop:~$ sudo eject sr2
user@user-desktop:~$ lsusb

If we see “0031” instead of “2000”, this means the usb modem is ready
for you to use.
Once, to be sure about the modem configuration, we have to look at the
“wvdial.conf” file.
To see its content, to be able to make changes if needed, we have to open for editting.
The command line is:
“sudo nano /etc/wvdial.conf”
“wvdial” is the internet connection package we will use, and “wvdial.conf” file is the
configuration file of it. Here the special data for the specific modem is held.
If you do not have “wvdial” on your computer, have it by entering
“sudo apt-get install wvdial” . (Nano is the editor package).
user@user-desktop:~$ sudo nano /etc/wvdial.conf
“WVDIAL.CONF” FILE READS AS:
[Dialer Defaults]

Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

This is the working configuration for ZTE MF636 – AVEA – Turkey.
If you made any change, enter “ctrl-o” to save data.
Enter “ctrl-x” to exit the editor window.
If needed somewhere, the other settings for this modem are:
APN: internet
DNS: auto
PDP: auto
after making config check, just RUN the “wvdial” package.
Enter “ sudo wvdial”.
tahir@tahir-desktop:~$ sudo wvdial

AND YOU CAN GO ALONG WITH IT...
TO END THE CONNECTION, ENTER “ CTRL-C”,
THAN CLOSE THE TERMINAL WINDOW.
The other questions you may have in mind can be :
will there be a explicit interface as it is in windows OS? --> No,
There will be only simple connection. That is all. No Service data, No Quota info etc.
Second and third times you do not need to perform all these steps. 2 command line will do.
a- sudo eject sr2
b- sudo wvdial - that is all FOR THE CONNECTION.
c- to end the connection, enter “ctrl-c”, than close the terminal window.
. have a good time with linux-ubuntu.
