Broadcom WiFi on an Asus F5R laptop, recommended driver?

Asked by george_rutkay

WiFi adapter is a BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01).

In "Hardware drivers" I have two choices for this adapter, the B43 driver or the STA driver. Which is the recommended driver to use for best reliability?

Thanks.

The STA driver is more reliable and gives better performance than the B43. For normal everyday use I recommend STA. But if you need advanced capabilities such as monitor mode, packet injection etc. for offensive security or penetration testing, you will need B43.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try it tonight.

It's for my wife's niece's laptop. She asked me to completely remove Winblows Vista (dead in the water, wouldn't start up anymore, just gave this huge honking ERROR screen upon startup) and install the newest Ubuntu on it.

Wireless is recognized and both drivers appear to work, but there is nothing to tell the user which is the better choice for reliability.

She's just going to use it for usual young adult stuff. Internet, downloading crap, chat, etc...she's no computer geek.

Thanks again.
