New to ubuntu & I loaded 9 10 and lost my wireless. I had it previously. How can I get it back.

I had a very similar problem which after many days of fruitless troubleshooting on advise from this forum I reinstalled 9.10 alternative and got wireless back. Never found out what broke it and learned nothing from the protracted troubleshooting.

Perhaps reinstallation may be the best option for your also as Ubuntu appears difficult to troubleshoot except for the expert. You may be given a string of commands to run that may or may not work but will you understand how it was fixed (if fixed) and what broke it in the first place?

This is why the system is so hard to learn with so many cryptic abreviated commands that are not intuitive and difficult to remember.

Kinda hate to ask... but what happens when ethernet cable is disconnected? I presume you've tried starting machine with cable unplugged.
I have a laptop that will occasionally activate both wired and wireless, but Network Manager traditionally handles only one interface at a time - unless i has evolved...

In my case the Compaq Presario 1200 laptop does not have an ethernet port so i have been using a Surecom EP 428x PCNCIA card for LAN access. Therefor in terms of the wireless issue it too was using a wireless PCMCIA 108 M card so in this case there was no ethernet cable to disconnect while testing wireless.
