firefox doesn't connect on 9.10 upgrade from 8.04

Asked by PeterB

I've upgraded from 8.04 to 9.10. This has upgraded to Firefox 3.5. Firefox will not connect to any websites, or maybe the download rate is very slow. If I go to "work offline" I get a text only display of the website. I connect using etho through an ADSl router. Pings to the wanted websites work and Thunderbird collects emails through POP3. Any clues?

Did you upgrade to 9.04 inbetween?
Can you ping websites by name?
Can you ping websites by IP?

Thanks

Standard upgrade path would be 8.04->8.10->9.04->9.10.
Check MTU values - a couple of forum threads solved similar problems by changing MTU value (via ifconfig) - 1492 being a common setting.

No I didn't upgrade via 9.04. This seems to be a "must do" fix so I will implement. What about doing a clean 9.10 install?
Yes I can ping websites by name and by IP. I can also pick up and send emails from Thunderbird via POP3 servers.
What is MTU?
Thanks to all for this support. I am away for 1 week so will report back to the forum on results after 17th

Then you have not followed te correct procedure which is most likely why you are getting issues. You cannot skip a releases and you must step through to the next release until you get to where you want to get.

Can you please give the outout of:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

If it is empty then run:

gksudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf

and add these 2 lines:

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

Save the new file and try the internet connection.

Can you help with this problem?
