I can't add/remove programs because ubuntu says i dont have a working internet connection

i basically cant install anything that i would like to use (e.g. Ktorrent) because it always tells me i have no internet connection... it really annoying

try in the terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

im able to browse the internet and everything else but i cant add/remove programs. I'm also new with ubuntu so i dont know where the terminal is

Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal.
lets take a look what: sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade does....

Devin, ubuntu 7.10 is no longer supported bij ubuntu, you should upgrade to version 8.04, or install the newest version of ubuntu which is ubuntu version 9.10.
8.04 LTS is a long term supported edition of ubuntu.

ok i installed unbuntu 9.10 to my computer but now i cant connect to the internet. its a wired connection
