No wireless on Ubuntu 9.10 b43 is installed and working.
Can't get wireless to work on my Ubuntu 9.10 install on a Dell Latitude D610 notebook. Wireless works fine when I boot the Dell to XP and the wireless LED on top of the Dell keypad stays lit when I boot to Ubuntu. I've verified that the b43 driver is installed and is working via System|
I've noticed that the connection speed reported by "Connection Information" is much slower that my g router setting, 1 Mb/s vs about 54 Mb/s. If I change the router from g mode to mixed-mode the "Connection Information" reports between 6 and 36 Mb/s but still can't ping my router.
I've looked at all the 9.10-related questions on this site and also on the Ubuntu forum with no luck so far.

ok cool,
run:
sudo apt-get install wicd
Then reboot, wicd will load at startup, click the icon and tell wicd that your wifi device is wlan0 and it will work fine.

The install went fine. But on reboot I did not see a place to tell wicd about wlan0. When I try to connect to my wireless network it takes a long time and then gives this error:
Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address.

A) Have you tried adding the proprietary drives? I believe there are two options for the card you listed -- try them both.

You can also try this documentation.

Charles:
I followed those instructions when I started and installed b43-fwcutter but it did not help. Actionparsnip is telling me to install wicd which I did. See my post 2009-12-17.
Actionparsnip:
Since my last post I found that wicd was set up with a default for wlan0 so that is not a problem.

Use ndisgtk + Windows driver. It should work fine.

I found some more information. There are two drivers for your card included in 9.10. You need to ensure you are using the correct one.
https:/
based on the information found here -- http://
and your pasted information:
802.11g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4318] (rev 02)
Your card is supported using the b43 driver.
I also noticed this from your paste:
*-network DISABLED
description: Wireless interface
Do you have wireless enabled?
I would research the information on both the pages I posted and see if you can resolve the issues.

Actionparsnip:
I'm following
https:/
on how to install and use Ndiswrapper.
I found the driver on my XP partition (bcmwl5.inf) for my wireless adapter and I installed that, successfully, I think.
In the following instructions:
"Alternatively, open a Terminal and try the commands ifconfig and iwconfig. Your wireless card should appear with an interface name of wlan0."
but I don't see an entry under wlan0.
I get to step 3.6.1 where I'm supposed to find (System | Administration | Networking) but I have no such app.
I was trying wicd before. Do I need to disable that to see the (System | Administration | Networking) app?

mbohn:
I am not sure... but with the B43 driver your card is supposed to work. There may have been other issues beyond the driver.

Log a bug then. If all else fails the ndiswrapper is no bad thing

Nothing worked until I replaced my router. No clue as to why. Went from a Linksys WRT54g to an Apple Airport Extreme. Then, Wicd very easily and quickly got the wireless working.
I only need to get my network printer working and I'll then have a fully functional Ubuntu system.
Thanks.

Glad you got the gold. Wicd is badass and is DE independant so can be ran in KDE / Gnome / XFCE etc with the same install footprint. It just cannot handle 3G / Dialup connections but if those are not needed then wicd can be used.It also has a curses interface so can be used without a desktop (like in the server install) to configure connections.
Linksys is the domestic grade product line from Cisco so I am shocked it didn't work.
Please mark as solved.
